Introduction

Welcome to the NJI’s Criminal Law Fundamentals course. The aim of this course is to equip newly appointed superior court and provincial court judges with key basics of criminal law and procedure. It also serves as a resource for seasoned judges who might benefit from a refresher or update in these areas.

Criminal Law Fundamentals presently comprises mini-courses on the following topics:

  • Bail
  • Severance of Counts or Accused
  • Testimonial Accommodations 
  • Interpreters
  • Self-Represented Accused
  • Jordan Applications
  • Directed Verdicts
  • Case Management and Summary Dismissal of Applications in Criminal Matters
  • Decision-Making 
  • Sentencing

Additional mini-courses will be developed and added on a rolling basis.

Wherever possible, each mini-course in Criminal Law Fundamentals is accompanied by additional resources, which NJI counsel have identified as relevant and practical supplementary tools.
