Course Description

This mini-course provides a quick reference on the law governing credibility assessments, the reasonable doubt standard and the sufficiency of reasons in the context of a criminal trial by judge alone. It offers succinct affirmative guidance in these three areas and concludes with a review of notable errors that have attracted repeated and/or concerted appellate attention.

The substance of this mini-course was reviewed by the following judges in April 2024:

  • The Honourable Justice Renee M. Pomerance, Superior Court of Justice (Ontario)
  • The Honourable Justice Frederick P. Ferguson, Court of King’s Bench of New Brunswick
  • The Honourable Justice Anne S. Derrick, Nova Scotia Court of Appeal
