This mini-course provides a quick reference on the case management and summary dismissal of applications in criminal matters. It reflects recent guidance provided by the Supreme Court of Canada in R v Haevischer, 2023 SCC 11.

The substance of this mini-course was reviewed by the Honourable S. Bruce Durno, formerly of the Superior Court of Justice (Ontario), in August 2023.

In keeping with the wording used in Haevischer, this mini-course “refer[s] to an underlying application as an ‘application’ or as an ‘underlying application’ and to a request for summary dismissal as a ‘motion’.” See footnote [1] of that decision for more information.
