Course Description

Despite making up only five percent of the female population in Canada, Indigenous women are disproportionately overrepresented in almost all statistics related to intimate partner violence. This course explores the complex historical origins of this current reality and allows judges to improve their cultural competence around the experiences faced by the Indigenous individuals appearing before them. This course will also help judges

  • better recognize the social, historical, and cultural factors that may impact the efficacy of court orders;
  • craft comprehensive parenting and protection orders that are culturally and historically responsive; and
  • craft comprehensive parenting and protection orders that are culturally and historically responsive; and
  • acquire tools to better promote a more accessible and receptive judicial process
